Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has opened applications for 16 full-time Wholetime Firefighter positions, with successful recruits following a fully funded apprenticeship route. The application window runs from 28 September to 11 October 2026, with the 16-week training course starting on 25 March 2027 and running through to 16 July 2027.
If you're thinking of applying, here's what to check and prepare before the window closes.
Eligibility: Check This Before Starting
- Be at least 18 years old when the training course starts — Staffordshire states there is no maximum age.
- Meet Staffordshire's stated citizenship or permanent residency and work restriction criteria.
- Be clean-shaven for safe breathing apparatus use, and meet the fitness standard assessed during recruitment.
- Hold a full manual or automatic driving licence.
- Declare any relevant unspent convictions.
For individual eligibility or medical questions, contact Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service directly rather than relying on general guidance — every case is assessed on its own merits.
Your Preparation Checklist
- Read the actual role. Understand that the job is about prevention, home safety and community engagement alongside emergency response — not just "putting out fires."
- Study each stage. Review Staffordshire's published selection process and any demonstration videos for the job-related tests.
- Gather real examples. Prepare truthful examples of helping others, teamwork, working under pressure, learning from mistakes and sound judgement — from work or life.
- Check your availability. Set aside the published test and interview windows, and consider whether you can commit to the March–July training course.
- Prepare steadily. Use the fitness and job-related test information to plan sensible preparation over time — avoid last-minute cramming.
- Submit early. Complete your application with enough time to check your answers and resolve any technical issues before the deadline.

A Recruit's Perspective
Recent Staffordshire recruit Ruth Hamilton advises candidates to research the service's values, take time to understand each stage of the process, and prepare real-life examples ahead of the interview rather than trying to think on the spot.
It's advice that echoes what many serving firefighters tell the Hub: the community-facing side of the job — home safety visits, education, working with vulnerable residents — is often overlooked by candidates focused solely on the physical tests, but it's just as central to the role and just as likely to come up at interview.
